About Elizabeth

Elizabeth Volkmann has had the pleasure of owning a toy shop, the joy of teaching young children, and many happy years exploring the world alongside her two children. She now writes stories inspired by the natural world and the scientists, artists and everyday people who draw attention to the beauty and wonder of this planet we call home.

Elizabeth was raised in a part of Massachusetts surrounded by low rising mountains and blanketed by a patchwork of farmland, orchards, and centuries-old small towns. Even though she grew up with four siblings and a neighborhood buzzing with cousins and school friends, she preferred to lose herself in the pages of a book or in a slow wander with her imaginary horse in tow.

Elizabeth has fond childhood memories of picking dew covered lilacs in June, patiently waiting for gray squirrels to take peanut butter crackers from her outstretched hand, and watching the zig-zag of lighting storms from the cozy comfort of a screened porch. She was especially fond of school and often assigned herself extra homework on weekends and summer vacations. She even roped her reluctant brothers into ‘playing school’ on rainy days.

As a young adult, Elizabeth moved to New York City to pursue her college education and follow her heart into the world of early childhood education. This sparked a great love and devotion for children’s literature that continues to this day. Books featured prominently in her graduate studies, filled her classrooms, and continue to accumulate on the bookshelves of her home ~ true to Elizabeth’s belief that a room without books is a lonely room indeed.

With her children grown and finding herself at a crossroads about whether to return to teaching or follow a desire to write her own children’s books, she bravely chose the path towards becoming an author.

Inspired on a daily basis, Elizabeth currently has a long and growing list of story ideas that she’d like to put down on paper if only time would allow. Her writing, both fiction and nonfiction, embodies a poetic sensibility meant to kindle a delight in language and provide enjoyment in reading a story over and over again.

When not at her desk, Elizabeth meanders through the hardwood forests of New England and the spicy-scented Everglades of southwest Florida. She more than likely has a camera in her hand and a dog by her side. Closer to home, she creates habitat gardens for all that creep, crawl and fly their way into the her corner of the world.

Elizabeth hopes that her books will encourage young readers to explore the natural world and share their marvelous discoveries with others.

Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.
